Oct. 13, 2023 (EIRNS)—The nation of China, in consultation with the nation of Brazil, currently presiding as United Nations Security Council head, has proposed that
“the UN has the responsibility and obligation to play its due role on the Palestinian question,” and that China “supports the Security Council in holding an emergency meeting on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, agrees that the meeting should focus on humanitarian concerns, demand a ceasefire, an end to violence and the protection of civilians, form a binding international consensus and take concrete next steps.”

Read more 📃Oct. 6, 2023 (EIRNS)—It is crystal clear to the world that the weapons flow to Ukraine from the United States, the biggest supplier, has been disrupted by last weekend’s tumult in the House of Representatives, unseating the Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). There is gnashing of teeth by the NATO warhawks. In Europe, chief of the EU diplomacy Josep Borrell appealed for the U.S. to soon, somehow “retake its role” in arming Ukraine. He spoke at an Oct. 5 summit of the European Political Community in Granada, Spain, attended by Ukraine President Zelenskyy as well. In the U.S., warhawk circles are mooting various ways to get around Congress, which means evading the Constitutional authority of Congress on war powers. For example, there is talk of “reprogramming” Pentagon expenditures already approved by Congress, to divert funding to Ukraine, from other non-Ukraine purposes.

What has brought people from all over the world together here in this conference, is the recognition that humanity is at a crossroad. There is clearly the danger that the present geopolitical confrontation—between those forces who want to assert that the Western liberal model of democracy is be the only good, and the only acceptable model, and those who insist that the idea of a unipolar world is irrevocably past and is already being replaced by a multipolar world order—could lead to a thermonuclear war.
Such a war could be ignited, by design or by accident, in the short term over the proxy war in Ukraine.), to boil the Russian frog” by provoking a Cuban Missile Crisis on steroids,” as he says, over a Ukrainian attempt to reconquer Crimea. Russia could view this as an existential threat, putting its nuclear forces on higher alert” and threaten its use, says Chalmers. This would be a moment of extreme peril,” he says. But, he adds: Precisely because of the peril inherent in such a situation, a nuclear crisis of this sort could make it easier for leaders to make difficult compromises.”
